THE DARK SIDE OF MBBS/MED SCHOOL
THE DARK SIDE OF MBBS / MED SCHOOL
You are an outstanding brilliant kid in your school days , 12th
pu college and you decide to go for medical school.
You see doctors earning
loads of money, you see doctors earning respect fame, you see doctors saving
lives, you are not good at maths, you want to bring up the society, help
people, and finally you decide to choose medicine as your career.
But
what you dont see are the hardships of the struggling doctors, abuses from
seniors, patients ward nurses, patients and people.
What you dont see are the silent
cries of the upcoming doctors, broken noses, bruises , broken arms
because of the assault on doctors.
What
you dont see are the poor doctors struggling for their pocket money, writing
lots of exams along their path to become a doctor, sleepless nights and finally
a continous stressful life , continous hairfall, weight loss or weight gain,
overall there is actually no life outside his workplace.
You would be very happy after joining
mbbs but infact you'll regret everyday after joining it especially when exams
are nearing .
It takes around 10 to 15 ýears of your
youth to become a successful doctor and start earning,
Thus is the era of superspeciality and
remember if you want to join mbbs be ready to sacrifice your 10 to 15 years for
it.
Nobody will ever tell you these things before joining mbbs.
1. Medicine will follow you everywhere. Even outside of work, people somehow think it’s fair game to ask you questions about their health or whatever they have heard on the news. You are morally obligated to respond in medical emergencies even when you are in flight on your vacation.
2. Work-life balance is a tremendous challenge. You carry your work with you long after your shift. You’ll think about that one patient and wonder if you have done everything right for them. After a long day of work, you’ll have no energy to interact with your spouse or children.
3. You are held to a different standard. You are expected to be kinder, more compassionate, and more patient.
4. Your body is tested to the limits. You learn to go 8 or more hours without bathroom breaks, drinking water, or having food. You find out you can still function after 24 hours of no sleep. This is especially true in residency and fellowship training. It’s still true for me as I’m working in the ICU.
5. You spend more time documenting than actual bedside care. This may be true only in the US. The regulatory demands pull doctors away from patients because “if it’s not documented, it doesn’t happen.””
6. Mistakes happen. No matter how meticulous you think you are, mistakes will happen and you will feel awful when they do.
The
competition to join mbbs itself is high and the stress levels to crack pg seat
and superspeciality test , the preparation for these exams , the unemployed
state during this preparation, keeping yourself calm during these days is of
utmost importance.
Burnout is generally high among doctors
globally, although the rates vary by medical specialty, practice setting,
gender, and career stage.
During
mbbs: Dont be happy yet
after joining mbbs , because the actual struggle is about to start , thus is
the beginning of a stressful, struggling ,endless journey.
Missing out on parties, missing out on
social occasions are all common.
Besides that On the very first day of
the very first year, we are made to sit in front of lifeless bodies- the
cadavers..
Over the span of 4 and half of years of
your mbbs you will face many stressful exams , emotional exhaustion, burn out
and finally you graduate to become an intern (house surgeon) ,that is the phase
when you finally feel like a doctor in initial phase to gradually realise that
you dont have a value or atleast a respect as a doctor and you would feel very
low and unworthy and thats when the need for post grauation comes and you fall
for the cat race, competing with lakhs of other mbbs graduates to grab a post
graduation seat.
During Post graduation: Busiest phase of your life if at all
you have chosen a clinical branch.
You need to get up at 6 or 7am in the
morning, go check your ward patients attend rounds, opd later then follow up ,
and attend emergencies. Emergency ots and come back to your rooms the next day
night or not come at all till 2 days or 3 days, missing out lunch dinner,
surviving on choclates and juices.
After post graduation: After pg , you would want to start
your own practice but you are not confident to start it, you would see your
colleagues getting into superspeciality, So you start thinking of alternatives
like superspeciality and again fall for the cat race for the exam.
Overall its a complete burn out of a
human being.
chronic exposure to human suffering and
long working hours have contributed to greater job stress and early burnout
among the doctors.
1.For every minute of fun in social
media, is 2 hours of imposter syndrome and feeling like you cant do it.
2. Medical hierarchy is real. You will
see professors venting out their frustration on ugs and pgs.
3.we have to complete most of the
syllabus on our own. There are very few teachers who actually teach well in
class, remaining of them just read the slides for the sake of teaching.
4. Expectations do not meet reality at
all.
5.Med school is not difficult, it is
just vast , it aint a rocket science to understand any concept here.
6.Very long course.
7. Academic pressure.
8. Violence against doctors.
9.A journey in Mbbs is akin to the harry
potter series. Every year it gets darker.
10. Too much stress to handle.
Il keep on adding the points,
This ,i feel is the dark side of mbbs.
